No, JROTC does not recruit for the Army and less than 1% of Cadets make a
personal decision to join the military.
3. Do I get any school benefits from being in the program?
JROTC is a high school program designed that provides a positive peer group to
help students do their very best academically by teaching time management,
critical thinking, public speaking, interpersonal communication, self-awareness
and teamwork preparing our students for college and beyond.
4. What motivates the majority to join JROTC?
Students join JROTC for many reasons but the reason they stay with the program
throughout HS is the sense of family and belonging to something larger than
themselves.
5. What do you learn in JROTC?
You learn a variety of academic and life skills in JROTC. Students study
leadership principles, leader actions, citizenship, time management, goal setting,
planning and SAT & ACT prep. Students have the opportunity to learn important
life skills like money management, college financing and collaboration skills, as
well as get a jump on college application process before their peers not in the
program.

All Classes at Francis Lewis have specific class codes. The JROTC code for
freshmen is (HPS21QTC- Geography).
7. What credits does JROTC satisfy on my transcript?
Students receive Social Studies elective credit for each year in the program, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors will receive Gym credit, and students in Drum Corps or Choir will
receive Music credit in their second year on the team.
8. If I join and I don’t want to continue, am I allowed to drop?
JROTC is an elective, and just like any other class, students sign up for the class
and must stay for the entire semester. If a student decides not to continue at the
end of the semester, JROTC is removed from their class schedule.
9. How do we earn a grade in JROTC?
JROTC is just like any other class and there are assignments, tests and projects
graded on percentage basis (0-100%).
